When you think about Arkansas, ground breaking surgical procedures don’t typically come first to mind. However, Luttrell Surgical and Healthy Aging is proud to be making headlines for exactly that. On September 10, Dr. Luttrell performed Arkansas’s first incision-less, nonsurgical ORBERA Intragastric Balloon procedure at Saline Memorial Hospital.
The procedure, in which a balloon filled with saline is inserted into the patient’s stomach, is FDA approved, and only takes about 15-20 minutes. Capable of helping patients lose 5-20 lbs, the ORBERA procedure is a great option for patients who are looking for nonsurgical options, or who may not have qualified for weight loss surgery otherwise.
Having a solid support system is an important aspect of any surgical procedure, but is especially so for weight loss. “Once the balloon is in place, the patient receives an individually tailored support program to help keep them motivated, coordinate their care and help them work through weight loss barriers to meet their long-term weight loss goals,” Luttrell said.
Dr. Luttrell is excited to be at the forefront of such an advanced weight loss procedure, and hopes to be able to do his part in fighting the obesity epidemic right here in his home state of Arkansas. This may have been the first procedure, but it certainly won’t be the last. Arkansas consistently ranks as one of the most obese states in the nation, right along our southern neighbors, Mississippi and Alabama.
