Non Surgical Weight Loss

Non-Surgical Weight Loss

The incidence of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate, not only in the US, but worldwide. Obesity is a complex disease with many causes including poor eating, environmental factors, and genetics. We can’t change our genetics, but one who is truly serious about losing weight can change their eating habits and exercise routine. Fast food, processed food, food high in carbohydrates or trans fats (hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats), and juices and sodas are the main culprits of poor eating habits, which lead to excess weight.

A Comprehensive Approach

We are able to offer physician-recommended, individualized programs based on lab work and a current medical evaluation to fit into your lifestyle. Through the use of medical foods, supplements, an exercise program and the eventual transition to healthy eating, we are able to help you achieve your goal and encourage this lifestyle. In addition, we now offer the newest weight loss procedure, the Orbera® Intragastric Balloon System as a combination approach to non-surgical weight loss.

ORBERA® Intragastric Balloon System

The Orbera® system is designed to assist with weight loss in people who ideally have 20-75 pounds of excess weight. It is suitable for individuals with a BMI (body mass index) greater than 27. It is also used for people who are not suitable for other forms of weight loss surgery, or those who are uncomfortable with the risks associated with traditional weight loss surgery methods. As Orbera® helps you feel full more quickly, it’s a great internal support system that works with you to help change bad habits and to achieve your weight loss goals.

This procedure does not require any surgical incisions nor do patients undergo general anesthesia. The intragastric balloon is introduced into the stomach through the mouth by a gastroscope. Once inside the stomach, the intragastric balloon is filled with sterile saline through a small filling tube attached to the intragastric balloon. Once filled, the filling tube is removed, leaving only the intragastric balloon inside the stomach.

Placement of the intragastric balloon takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. After the procedure, patients are monitored by nursing staff in our recovery area. As this is an outpatient procedure, patients are generally escorted home within two hours after intragastric balloon insertion.

A Healthy Diet

There are many diets available on the market, so choose one that makes the most sense for you and is the easiest to follow. This will increase your chances of success. The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest ways of eating and includes fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, olive oil, lean meats in moderation (grass-fed meat is among the healthiest to consume), and wine if you so choose. The correct diet is one with plenty of healthy fats, low carbohydrates and good lean protein.

Weight Loss Medications

Prescription weight-loss medications are usually temporary because without a good diet, exercise and a commitment to loose weight, the long-term results are poor. The peak time frame of weight-loss medication effectiveness is about 90 days, however it can be effective for short term weight loss.
